A Month-by-Month Lawn Care Calendar for Homeowners

Home Services, Done Right.

A homeowner holding a calendar with seasonal lawn care tasks marked on it, surrounded by gardening tools.

A lush, green lawn isn't just about aesthetics; it’s about the health of your home’s ecosystem. But achieving that carpet of green requires more than just occasional mowing. It requires a strategic approach to timing. In the world of lawn care, doing the right job at the wrong time can be as damaging as doing nothing at all.

Whether you are dealing with the harsh freeze of January or the scorching heat of July, understanding the seasonal rhythm of your grass is key. This comprehensive calendar breaks down exactly what needs to happen each month to keep your yard thriving year-round.

The Seasonal Guide

Your Year-Round Lawn Care Roadmap

January – February

Rest and Planning. Your lawn is dormant. Focus on planning your spring strategy. Check your irrigation system for leaks and ensure sprinkler heads aren't buried under snow. Prune trees and shrubs before new growth begins.

March – April

Aeration, Fertilizing, First Mow. As the ground thaws, aerate to relieve soil compaction. Apply a slow-release fertilizer to kickstart growth. Mow for the first time when grass reaches 3 inches, keeping the blade set high.

May – June

Regular Mowing, Weed Control. Increase mowing frequency to every 5–7 days. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to stop crabgrass before it sprouts. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root systems.

July – August

Watering Strategy, Heat Protection. Raise the mowing height to shade the soil and retain moisture. Water early in the morning to prevent fungal diseases. Watch for heat stress and consider aeration in shaded areas.

September – October

Overseeding, Leaf Cleanup. This is the best time to overseed bare patches. Rake leaves regularly or mulch them into the lawn to provide nutrients. Apply a fall fertilizer to strengthen roots before winter.

November – December

Final Mow, Winterizing, Gutter Clearing. Give the lawn one last mow at 2 inches. Apply a winterizer fertilizer. Clear gutters to prevent ice dams and water damage to your home's foundation.
